Teaching Latin

This year has been so much fun so far. We have a wonderful new head of school and I have been teaching Latin to our students. We decided to use the curriculum from Classical Academic Press called "Song School Latin" and "Latin for Children". We have a preschool starting at age 3 and go up through 6th grade. Our workbooks start in the 1st grade, so with my younger students I do a combination of teaching them the songs for the Latin curriculum, and play using the vocabulary and other props. Pinterest has been a fantastic resource for giving me ideas.

For their days of the week, there is a song in their Song School Latin 2 book. All the days are based on a planet, so we created their bulletin board around the planets.

Our 1st graders are making great progress through their workbooks and have learned many new words and derivatives that really expand their vocabulary. We have decided to create a house using their household vocabulary words. Another great idea from Pinterest.  Later in the year, we will be creating a whole village and doing a show with puppets for the rest of the school.

I wanted to get the kids acting out what they learned, so on their "Quid agis?" (how are you?) chant, we created faces out of paper plates. So when their friend asks them "Quid agis?" they use the face to emphasize their response. I also created little flash cards for each response.

That's all I've got for today. As I create more, I'll post it up and share with you what is going on in the classroom, not just in Latin, but in Music class too!
